I was asked recently what I would do differently after launching your podcast today?
After hundreds of episodes, here’s what I’d double down on again—no fluff, just real lessons learned.
(P.S. – Read ALL of these points but #9 is the most important!)
1. Launch before it’s perfect. If you are waiting to feel confident on the mic, you will be waiting forever. Clarity comes *after* action. Publish that first episode, awkward intro and all. Momentum > perfection.
2. Take it seriously from day one. Don’t go cheap – buy the right equipment, get the proper hosting services (About $50-$100 bucks monthly, give or take). Even if your audience is small (or zero), treat the podcast like a flagship product. Define your tone, format, and cadence early. When you show up like it matters, others start to believe it does too.
3. Relentlessly show up on a consistent schedule. If you’re not consistent, you’re forgettable. Early on, I released regular episodes every week—no exceptions. That rhythm became trust. And trust builds faster when people know when to expect you.
4. Put the spotlight on your guests. Your job is to see them, not sell yourself. Every episode is a platform to amplify someone else’s story—do that well, and you’ll build a network, not just content. People remember how you made them feel.
5. Squeeze more value out of every episode. Your podcast is a content engine. Each conversation has layers like clips for social, quotes for email, insights for future blogs, etc. We repurposed heavily—but I wish we’d done even more. Treat it like a content machine.
6. Build something bigger than the show. The podcast isn’t the finish line. It’s the starting block. It should fuel your brand, your mission, your movement. The SGS podcast became a magnet for the right people and a launchpad for everything else we built.
7. Talk about your values – A LOT. Let them show up in your language, your intros, your interviews, your calls to action. Values aren’t branding—they’re culture. And culture is what people want to follow.
8. Understand the technical pieces – OR – hire a podcast consultant to guide you. Sound quality, editing, flow, mic placement, hosting platforms… it can feel overwhelming. You don’t need to master it all, but you do need to respect the experience your listeners will have. If the tech side feels like a barrier, a good consultant can shorten your learning curve, prevent costly mistakes, and help you launch with confidence.
9. Understand promoting & marketing your podcast – MOST IMPORTANT. To make your podcast successful with powerful content plus get the far reach you need; you MUST get it approved and published in the right places. Here are the top ones below.
- Spotify. The leading podcast app with over 35% of all podcast downloads. With its personalized recommendations, video podcasting options, and massive built-in audience, Spotify is a must-have for reach and visibility.
- Apple Podcasts. Responsible for over 33% of downloads and pre-installed on all Apple devices.
Apple is ideal for niche shows, thanks to enhanced discoverability tools like transcripts, chapter markers, and better analytics. Use compelling episode titles and artwork to climb the charts.
- YouTube Music. – Now Google’s primary podcast platform, it supports both audio and video.
Tied to YouTube’s search engine power, this platform helps your content get discovered organically—especially if you optimize your titles and descriptions with SEO best practices.
- Amazon Music & Audible. Growing fast due to integration with Alexa devices and Amazon’s vast ecosystem. Amazon offers monetization options and premium features, perfect for those looking to scale and profit from their content long-term.
- Castbox. A rising player that leverages AI-powered discovery and SEO optimization to surface your show in more searches. Their Creator Studio tools give you deeper analytics and community-building tools to increase engagement.
Build it smart, scrappy, and more focused on building community.
